'The Galley' was an ancient vessel of the seafaring Clans of the Western Isles of Scotland. Illustrations of these galleys began to appear early on, and because pictures were used to tell stories, as with other symbols, so the galley became prominent in family crests, coats of arms and gravestones. The ships with sails set showed Man passing through the storms and tempest of Life, while those with sails furled meant that Man had finished the voyage of life and had reached safe harbour with God.
